Zali and Jett's school swimming carnival was held a week or so ago.
Zali is in grade 6 this year, so it was her last year of swimming at Waimea - and probably her last year of me or Jon being able to watch her swim in a carnival (parents don't come along to the high school ones). So I really didn't want to miss watching her race but this year the school moved the competition venue to the other side of the city. I felt that I couldn't really justify taking the extra time off work to go and check it out - it was much easier when it was at the Hobart Aquatic Centre and I could cycle there.
Instead I decided that I'd watch her in the inter school competition - she just needed to get selected for the team like she had all the other years… yep.. I put all my eggs in that basket..
So unfortunately while she swam pretty well (so I hear) at the school carnival, she didn't get selected for the team - to be fair Waimea does have pretty good swimmers - they've won the carnival 4 years in a row - as an aside, I attribute this success to socio-economic status - richer kids = more swimming lessons. Anyway, Zali came home with a swag of ribbons but didn't make the team. She was a bit disappointed about it, but mostly fine. I, on the other hand, was really disappointed, not in her, but in myself for missing her last swims. :(
But at 7:15 this morning we got a call up from the PE teacher, unfortunately one of Zali's friends was sick, and Zali was a reserve so she was IN. Which was great - she got to swim 3 races, and she got a place in one of them. AND I got to see it - YAY. A lucky break for a working mum!
