One (of many things), I haven't been able to capture with my camera, is just how many bicycles there are, but more impressively, what people are carting around in them. Mopeds and Scooters are by far the most popular modes of travel here, but bicycles certainly seem to have their role, particularly when it comes to hauling stuff around.
And we've seen just about everything being hauled around - lots of bikes have some sort of small stall built into the back of them, some have trays at the front filled with crates and crates of pepsi and 7up, or piles of watermelon. Some people are cycling around with 10 giant bbq sized gas bottles in their trailer thing and today we passed a guy riding around with a brand new washing machine. I've also seen large loads of hay, piles of bananas, a fridge, other people, everything you could imagine. And whilst Chennai is pretty flat, some sections of even the most major roads, are really more suited to a mountain bike than the rusty old bikes being used. And of course it's a zillion degrees too, so doing things like hauling the gas bottles is super impressive.
As I said, my photos have managed to capture none of that, so here are some other vaguely bicycle related shots - taken with my phone, from the moving car..
There are not bikes in this next shot, but I like it. These sari-skirt things are what the more elderly laborer gentlemen tend to wear..and generally they are the guys with the toughest and most unpleasant looking jobs like carting rubble around or digging holes in the side of the road.:
