When you need to pack for a temperature range of between minus twenty and plus thirty it presents some challenges! 95% of our bag space is taken up with our cold weather gear - alpine jackets, waterproof trousers, snow boots, thermals (2x tops, 2 x bottoms), beanies, gloves etc etc. The rest is couple of t-shirts, pairs of shorts & crocs/thongs. I recon if we had packed for Malaysia alone we could have just taken 2 carry-on bags between us, such is the small amount of clothes we've used here! Our bags are pretty bulky but not particularly heavy - Jon's and mine are about 22kg, the kids' are around 10 kg.
All the cold weather gear we took with us from Hobart was great. The stuff we bought cheaply at Anaconda at the end of the ski-season including our $20 cold weather boots was really excellent, and the Kathmandu & Macpac thermals were perfect. I think we only really lacked those windproof x-country ski jackets which I got from the Salvos in Lillehammer, and Harald bought us all 2 pairs of thin wool socks after 1 day in Drammen, so none of us had cold feet the entire trip. Thanks Harald!
