My 2 little kodak cameras have failed in exactly the same way - the second one quite recently (something seems to be stopping the lens extending) presumably because of some sand or something, so the other night I came up with the grand plan to take apart and fix the older one myself and when that worked, I'd apply my skills to the newer one and presto I'd have 2 working cameras again! yay me.
40 minutes and a zillion teeny tiny little screws later I realised that they don't actually make digital cameras with human labour thus humans could never actually repair them either. So now I have one broken camera, and one collection of camera parts, loosely attached to eachother by some sort of ribbon wire. dang. If only I had kept the receipt.
