Big Moves

Friday, 3 February 2023

By far the biggest thing to happen this summer is that mum and dad have moved house.   After a year or so of seriously looking for somewhere more suitable to live, Denny and mum found the very-close-to-perfect house in Blackmans Bay back in October, and managed to make the perfect offer for it in what was a very hot market at the time.  After the offer was accepted mum began the huge project of planning and preparing for this move - the first time they have moved house in 50 years.

With dad to consider (he was pretty reluctant each time he was informed of the move), mum's priority was to make it as painless and easy for him as possible - and I think between mum and Denny they have succeeded.   On the day Denny kept dad out of the way, but still close enough to witness (and hopefully remember) the move, while mum controlled things at the Sandy Bay end.  Once clear of the old house (at least the important stuff), the priority was then to recreate Dad's bedroom as closely as possible, and to make a comfortable spot in the new living room for him so he could stick to his daily routine as much as possible. The new house even includes a spot so similar to where dad would eat his breakfast at the old place that I can't imagine a better place for him at the moment.

Goodbye old house:

Mum loves the new house and keeps discovering things that she loves even more about it.  It's light and airy and not-falling-apart and the access to it does not feature an extremely steep driveway.  It's only 7 minutes away from our place so it's been easy to drop by often since the move.  I've been in charge of moving and hanging paintings so I've made a few trips from St Canice ave with my non-gallery-approved painting transport vehicle:

I was also in charge of setting up dad's afternoon spot - from this:

plus it has pictures now and looks more homely.  It should be noted that this house looked absolutely amazing on the real estate photos - all decked out in matching modern furniture.  Amazingly it is still hanging in there, despite being filled to the brim with a mish-mash of vintage bits and pieces.  The high ceilings and lovely wooden floors and deck can't be brought down by just a bit of shabby furniture!

Being in charge of rehanging the pictures was a heavy responsiblity but I believe I've made good and correct decisions:

There's still more to unpack and arrange, and I want to take some better photos of everything but that's probably best done in a few weeks, once mum has had a chance to unpack some more and recover a bit - it's been a big few weeks.
