I've played basketball since I was about 9 - the final scores in our games back then (before any AusKick style junior version was invented) tended to be around 4-0 or 2-0. I can just imagine how much fun it would have been for mum watching all our games. Especially when Denny and I played on different teams (which was most of the time mostly cos I was a little taller throughout those years). Anyway - throughout my early teenage years, I used to spend hours preparing myself physically for my games. And were not talking preparing as in practising, rather I was preening. Arranging my converse tube socks (2 different colours) until they were just so, doing my hair, shaving my legs, removing any other stray hairs (we wore bather's style shorts in those days too), whitening my shoes and checking I wasn't too fat for my all girls game.
Tonight I turned up to basketball with very hairy legs, extremely hairy armpits (this was an accident, not a lifestyle decision), a good few beer kegs worth of kilos heavier than those days, and definately without any perfectly arranged converse socks. Satisfyingly though, I can shoot a bit better than I could in under 12's. I play with Denny now which is good as we're pretty much the same skill and height level now, and she can cover my game fee when I can't afford to pay!
Note: These shoes are a picture from the web - while looking for a suitable picture, I found basketball boots exactly like the ones I wore in the 80's on sale for $299 on ebay! If only I'd kept all my pairs. In mum and dad's roof. And not worn them... hmmm - maybe it wouldn't have been all that practical.
