I have to say, I'm not much of a pie fan. It may be because I'm a mostly a vegetarian and vegetarian pies don't tend to have the juicy gravy or whatever that oozes out of 'real' pies that makes them moist and delicious. The few vegetarian pies I have had are either a bit dry, or they are cheese and cauliflower with really flakey pastry which are yummy but I could probably eat a 250g block of chocolate and walk away with the same amount of kilojoules and we all know which would be my preferred option there!
Flans or Tarts on the other hand are good. They don't have too much pastry and you can fill them up with anything, and their open nature means you can be assured that there aren't any nasties hiding inside (like sultanas, or perhaps the person that bought the pie for you forgot you were a vegetarian). Anyway in the last couple of days I've made a chocolate flan complete with delicious chocolate pastry (which unfortunately due to um... technical reasons.. I am was not able to photograph of in time) and a pumpkin, feta and caramelised onion tart which was also delicous. So for me, tarts win. Especially if they are chocolate..
