Euro Day 5 - Heading towards Lyon

Despite our prayers to Minaret, the NZ goddess of camping, we were given no respite with the heat today, in fact the temperature was above 40 for a lot of the day - sheesh! The only good thing was that we were driving for a fair chunk of it so it could have been a lot worse - at least we had air conditioning in the car.

After packing up our tents we headed to the closest and largest of the castles - Chateaux Chambord.  It was really spectacular - and it had an amazing ipad guide thingy where you could look around a room to see what it looked like back in time when it was sort of disorganised and full of stuff - as opposed to set up in fancy rennaisance style as it was today. It was really great.

 

 

We spent a few hours there and  probably would have spent more but it was getting really really hot, so we needed to leave. 

After our usual supermarket stop for baguettes and fromage we continued along the road looking for a picnic site with some shade - we couldn't even find one without shade so eventually we parked in a field which was set aside for parking for a Jazz festival at another nearby castle. Sounds crazy but it worked well!  

 

Back on the road we had a lot of driving to do - almost 400k, and most of it was on toll roads which made the journey pretty fast (speed limit of 130 most of the way), and pretty expensive - I think we paid 20 euro in tolls. Worth it though as we arrived at a campsite just outside of St Etienne (about 50k from Lyon) at around 6pm - early for us!

We've just had dinner (again - early for us on this trip!), and I'm sitting in the shade on the grass writing this blog. Another fantastic holiday day!
