Melbourne Weekend

Monday, 27 May 2019

A few weeks ago Jon and I snuck off to Melbourne to celebrate our friend Jo's 50th birthday party. Jo never does things in halves, and her circus themed party was completely awesome.

A group of us stayed in a hotel in the Docklands so Clare and I could go ice skating. I got to try out my new ice skates and they were great - thanks Clare!  The rooms were really nice too -  The photo doesn't do it justice but the picture below is of an ultimate frisbee game - I could even see the frisbee travel up and down the field as the opposing teams thrashed it out. I miss ultimate frisbee.

The views from ground level were nice too:

After intensive costume preparations we all rode the tram to the speigeltent decked out in our circus gear. It's Melbourne though, so no-one really bats and eyelid at what you wear.

After an awesome night featuring family performances, burlesque performances, magic acts and speeches, as well as much dancing and even a flash mob Jon and I rolled back to the hotel. The next day we picked up a NZ friend who had come over for the party and we went out to Mt Macedon for an orienteering event.  The finishing touch to our great weekend was the fantastic vanilla slices we ate for brunch at the Woodend bakery afterwards.   For a change the bakery actually delivered on their promise of 'Worlds Best' vanilla slice. Yum.
